If you’re like me, Halloween always brings back wonderful, nostalgic memories - many of mine include watching Scooby-Doo with my brothers!
This year, I wanted to try to create a super easy costume inspired by the Mystery Machine! Spooky 60s groovy vibes? Yes, please!! Now, the Mystery Machine is depicted slightly differently depending on which version of Scooby-Doo we’re talking about, so for this costume, we’re really channeling the essence of the Mystery Machine with the blues, greens, and oranges! And the flowers, of course!
This costume ended up coming together so easily & I love how it turned out!
Supplies (find most of these on my Amazon storefront!)
Aqua blue dress (mine is ‘a new day’ brand from Target, but I found it secondhand on Poshmark! There are so many great secondhand options!)
Bright green tights
Orange polymer clay (similar options listed on my Amazon storefront!)
Orange heat-transfer vinyl (or orange fabric paint)
Earring findings (similar options listed on my Amazon storefront!)
Optional
Orange shoes (mine are from Target from a few years ago)
Orange headband
Step 1: Add flowers to your dress
This is really the only “necessary” step to this costume: adding the flowers to your dress! You can do this a couple of ways - I find it easiest to use my Cricut machine with heat-transfer vinyl, but if you don’t have one, you could totally use orange fabric paint and just paint the flowers on. I am not a very talented artist, so Cricut is my preference!
I found an image online of the Mystery Machine and traced the flowers using Procreate, and then uploaded those to my Cricut software. You can also just find generic flower graphics if you don’t want to spend the time tracing!
With my orange heat-transfer vinyl, I cut out the flowers in a few sizes using my Cricut. I cut three but only ended up using 2 for the front of the dress, however, you can use as many flowers as you’d like!
Using my Cricut heat press (a regular iron works, too), I pressed the flowers onto my dress, trying to mimic the placement on the Mystery Machine. I love how the orange pops against the blue!
Step 2: Make flower earrings
This step is totally optional, but I think it’s a fun addition! Using orange polymer clay, I free-handed some flower shapes and poked a hole at the top. I baked these according to the clay instructions.
Once cooled, I used large jump rings and hook earring findings to turn these flowers into dangly earrings!
Step 3: Put it all together!
And there you have it: a super easy, DIY Mystery Machine costume! The final step is to put it all together! The colors are SO fun and I love how the orange headband gives it that extra 60s vibe!
